Take Advantage of Solar Energy!

The sun has been a constant in our lives since the beginning of time. While it may be covered by clouds sometimes, we have benefitted from the sun and solar energy every single day of our lives. It provides the heat that allows us to survive on earth, and the light that we would be lost without. Solar energy is also a free resource, and one that you can take advantage of in so many different ways that are good for the environment, good for your wallet, and good for your soul. Hundreds of years ago, people depended on the sun and its solar energy to grow their plants, heat their homes, dry their food so it could be safely preserved for the winter, dry their clothes after washing, among other things. As a modern society, we have become spoiled by the appliances and energy we have at our disposal, and even though the sun costs nothing to use, we seemed to equate it with ‘doing without’; something that only poor people use because they cannot afford any better. That really couldn’t be farther from the truth.

However, in recent years, especially with the emergence of the green movement, people have begun making efforts to go back to a simpler lifestyle; one that isn’t so dependent on power companies and electronics. As a result, solar energy has begun to regain its popularity. While you are not required to spend any money to benefit from solar energy, many people have begun attaching solar panels to their rooftops in order to gather the solar energy and convert it into useable energy. However, these panels can become quite expensive, and may not yet be an efficient option for many households. It is possible that in the future, people may be able to receive tax credit or other incentives to use solar panels to collect solar energy. Until that time, there are still lots of ways that you and your family can benefit from solar energy.

Think about drying your clothes on a line instead of in an electric dryer. Not only does it save you money on your power bill, but it is also much better for the fabric. If you have ever shrunk an expensive sweater after just one wear, then you surely realize the opportunity to dry clothes gently and effectively without causing change to the fabric itself. If you have your own garden, you can try drying some of your bounty. Vegetables and herbs that are dried in the sun can last for months if kept in a properly sealed container. When it is time to use them, all you have to do is rehydrate them. However, if you are going to try drying food in the sun, there are a few precautions you need to take in order to keep animals and pests from getting to your food. A simple online or library search can provide you with all of the necessary steps to dry food successfully, as well as any other process to take advantage of solar energy.
