Energy Efficient Yard and Garden Tools

When you are looking for ways to conserve household energy consumption, one of the things that is most commonly overlooked is the yard and garden.  In fact, many people assume that little to no energy is expended in this area.  While most people have lighting, irrigation, and lawn equipment, few people consider the energy consumption of these items.  What follows are a few tips to lessen your carbon footprint in your yard and garden.  With these tips, you can maintain your beautiful landscape without high energy cost and consumption.

The first way to significantly reduce energy cost for your garden or yard is to change your outdoor lighting to solar lighting or hybrid lighting.  In areas where there is enough sunlight, solar lighting can provide ample illumination at night without the need to utilize electricity.  Since for most people outdoor lighting is on for only a few hours at a time, solar lights hold more than enough energy to serve their purpose.  For people in perpetually dark areas or who use their lights all night, there are hybrid lighting options that utilize solar energy as long as possible before switching to electricity.  Savings vary depending on the amount of actual electricity used, but lights that use solar power alone cost nothing to operate, and can add up to fast savings.

Another excellent way to conserve energy in your yard and garden is through more efficient water consumption.  This can be achieved in a number of ways, from using mulch to trap moisture and tilling soil frequently to keep it from becoming dry and compact to utilizing drip hoses that slowly water the soil rather than using a standard hose to frequently soak it.  The purchase of a soil moisture gauge can help determine moisture levels in the soil so that you only water your lawn when it is necessary.  These implements can all be used to drastically reduce water consumption and can be quite inexpensive to purchase and use.

When considering your lawn mower, the two most common types use electricity or gas, both resulting in high costs and reduced fossil fuels.  There are many eco-friendly alternatives however.  Hand powered mowers have received upgrades recently that make them quite effective, and they have no energy cost.  New solar powered mowers operate like standard mowers but again have no energy cost.  Both options are remarkably environmentally friendly and reduce the cost of mowing your yard by 100 percent.

In short, there are many yard and garden options that can help you better your property.  These options clear the landscape and make it more attractive without consuming valuable resources.  They provide an excellent way to beautify your property in a way that helps the environment as well.
