An Eco-Friendly Bedroom Is Easier Than You Think

When it comes to creating an environmentally friendly home, many people largely overlook the bedroom.  While changing to energy saving light bulbs can save nearly one hundred dollars over the lifetime of the average lighting in a bedroom, many people think that their lighting is the only option to create an eco-friendly bedroom.  The truth is that this is only the first of many ways to make even this room better for the environment.

When it comes to electronics, the only appliances common in every bedroom besides lights are an alarm clock and a television.  Many alarm clocks can be designed to draw power from perpetual motion, winding, or even by absorbing light.  This will not break records in terms of financial savings, but over the course of the year, it can produce significant energy savings.  When an atomic or other self-powered clock is combined with eco-friendly lighting and an Energy Star certified television, however, the savings can quickly add up.  A bedroom with only energy saving electronics and lighting can easily save your home well over one hundred dollars annually.

When looking to have a bedroom with a low environmental impact, there are other places to look as well.  Purchasing second hand furniture reduces deforestation and these pieces are less likely to be laden with dangerous chemicals.  This also greatly reduces landfill waste.  Eco-friendly linens are made with organic materials and their production uses less energy and chemicals, making the process much safer for the environment.  The materials are durable and of very high quality, and are created without harmful processes used my many textile manufacturers.

Other options to create a more sustainable and eco-friendly bedroom include hardwood flooring and natural fiber rugs or carpeting.  Bamboo flooring is made from an entirely renewable resource and does not require the destruction of the plant during harvest.  This means that it is entirely sustainable as well as an excellent and durable flooring option.  Cork floors are also an environmentally friendly choice.  These flooring types do not give off harmful chemicals like carpet does for years after installation, making them much safer for people as well as the environment.

There are many ways to create an environmentally friendly bedroom.  While it may seem like a small room in regards to energy use, this conversion can make a large difference.  When it comes to reducing greenhouse emissions and saving energy, every step forward is crucial, and changing your bedroom linens, flooring, and appliances can be an excellent step towards a more energy efficient and environmentally friendly home.
